Hi peeps.
Today, I'm going to do some review of the movie I recently watched, 5cm.
I watched it twice.
First of all, overall comment.
The movie is completely inspiring.
It truly captures the value of friendship, dreams, persistence, determination, love and faith.
Secondly, introduction.
The introduction is quite direct.
It starts with the intro of the main characters.
The narrator is my favourite actor, Zafran (real name : Herjunot Ali).
It also describes the unique personality of each character in a humorous way.
The lesson learnt is that every person is unique in his/her own way.
Whether it's a good or "not so good" personality, we should acknowledge it instead of to taunt or to insult it.
Everybody is special okay.
I'm gonna share about my life a little bit here.
I like studying.
I don't know why studying is always correlated with geek, nerd, thick glasses.
Studying is not useless.
We gain knowledge, information, things that we haven't heard of.
But understanding all those things does not guarantee you a high mark in examination.
That's why you need to memorise.
Some people really abhor rote memorisation.
But you need to get good marks to enter good university.
All the co-curricular activities and community service probably are the second things the university is looking at.
The primary thing is still the academics.
Yet, I am always called mugger by my fellows.
They always say things like don't stress yourself, but in fact I don't.
I'm just doing my duty as a student.
And I just have to work the extra mile to get marks like theirs.
That's what I was told when I got a scholarship to country X, that I need to work harder than others.
In my hometown, I was never called like that even once.
It's because everyone's is doing the same thing as me.
Not everyone, I mean my classmates.
I was considered to be in one of the smartest classes in my previous school in my hometown.
And most of my classmates strive to get the first position.
This mindset has been ingrained in me since I was young.
Well, I think there is nothing wrong with that.
There is a feeling of gratification when you accomplish or achieve something.
And that's the feeling I'm always chasing at.
I never think that I am better than others if I am ranked first.
We are all equal and that's my belief.
I never look down or underestimate others.
That would be a manifestation of prejudice, wouldn't it?
Well, this is not exactly what we want as it may lead to massacre or even war.
I hate being called mugger and being pitied upon a false hypothesis.
Let's continue with the review.
Thirdly, the climax.
I think the climax is when the rocks are rolling down the slope and a friend called Ian is thought to be dead.
The moment he was confirmed to be dead by his friends, I was really shocked.
Can being hit by a rock cause a death? I asked myself.
I think the whole idea of trekking is crazy because it's extremely risky.
It's about your life.
How if he really died?
How are they going to explain to his parents?
Can they possibly be responsible for it?
Will they end up feeling remorseful instead of gratified?
I personally would never go on such trip unless there is someone who can ensure my safety.
However, I have to admit that this journey really examines how true the aforementioned values are.
And I really admire those who manage to complete this adventure successfully.
Fourthly, the ending.
It is a happy ending indeed.
I think there is some propaganda in it though.
The message I received is that all Indonesians should stay in Indonesia and be grateful of everything that the country has given to you.
Well, we can observe that there are prolific Indonesian immigrants in countries like Singapore, Australia and USA.
As the nation gets richer, people's incomes increase. They have more real disposable income and they are able to afford air travel, even to continents as far as Europe.
That's what I learned in my economics lesson. Haha.
The movie also ends with the marriage between Zafran and Riani (I love this part), Arial and the girl he met in his gym, Ian and Happy Salma (this is especially amusing!) as well as the start of the relationship between Genta and Dinda.
Riani (real name : Ralene) is from my hometown.
When I watched the movie, she was there too.
She's gorgeous.
Fifthly, comment on each of the main characters.
Zafran : cool, handsome, determined, expressive, leader-like.
Riani : beautiful, nice smile, friendly.
Arial : buff, timid.
Ian : funny, persistent.
Genta : leader-like, smart.
Dinda : innocent, expressionless.
That's all.
Coming next is the quotes in the movie, which are very inspiring indeed!
The novel was written by Donny Dhirgantoro.
